The Chesterfield-Ruby Middle School Engineering Challenge Team traveled to Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College on March 25th to compete in the 2017 South Carolina 4-H Engineering Challenge. Team participants included: Carson Adams, Madison Aycock, Liana Brock, Riley Croxton, Leah Gardner, Kadence Haire, and Connor Tolson. This was the first year CRMS has participated in the challenge events. Carson Adams and Liana Brock participated in the Mystery Challenge which required team members to create a pasta car designed to go down a ramp. The Bridge Building Challenge team members were Madison Aycock, Riley Croxton, and Kadence Haire. This team used the engineering design process to create a tress bridge to hold as much weight as possible. The last team of Leah Gardner and Connor Tolson competed in the GPS (Global Positioning System) Challenge to find cache locations with parts used to build a wind turbine. Gardner and Tolson won 1st place in the competition by defeating teams with members who ranged in age from 9 to 19 years old. The Engineering Challenge allowed participants to apply their STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) skills in a fun and challenging environment.
